So you think youve seen all the good scary movies? Here are a few gems you might have missed. Try renting any of these films for a movie night in terror heaven.
Abby (1974)
Starring Carol Speed and William Marshall, this blaxploitation horror film was a classic of possession. It told the story of a marriage counselor that was possessed by an African Demon of sexuality. Since it was so similar to the Linda Blair movie of 1973, the makers of that film sued and shut down Abby after a two week run in the theaters. Sexuality would make this an R rated movie today.
Alone in the Dark (1982)
This movie could be called "Night of the Character Actors" since so many of them are in this. It is a story about three murderous psychopaths escaping from the mental hospital during a power outage. They go "visit" the doctor that has tried strange treatments on them. This movie stars Jack Palance, Donald Southerland and Martin Landau. The violence would make this an R rated movie today.
The Bad Seed (1956)
A very, very disturbing movie about a woman who has everything. She has a wonderful home, a loving husband and the "perfect" daughter. However and there's always a however in life, maybe perfection isn't all it's made out to be. Not for children under 13.
Blacula (1972)
This movie stars the Shakespearean actor, William Marshall as an African prince who offers hospitality to, and entertains a Romanian count; Dracula. He's repaid by having his wife raped and killed and he is bitten and trapped in a locked coffin to suffer hunger and loneliness for all eternity. He's set free in America, when his possessions are shipped there over 400 years later. Violence makes it unsuitable for children under 13.
Burnt Offerings (1976)
A fantastic movie about a house with a soul starring Burgess Meredith, Oliver Reed and the mysterious Karen Black. The book is exceptional, but the movie is so much better. Today's rating would be PG-13.
Demon Seed (1977)
One of the better science fiction/horror films of the seventies. A supercomputer rapes it's creators wife in order to create a hybrid baby. Sounds stupid, but the acting, direction, special effects and music were all slamming. Better than most of the modern sci-fi movies.
Freaks (1932)
Today, this film could not be made. It starred many of the side show performers that we have heard about, but thought were fakes. These were the real items The story is about relationships and what can happen when someone mistakenly think they can take advantage of a "weaker" person. Not for children under 15.
Last House on the Left (1972)
If you have a weak stomach, do not see this movie. It has very disturbing imagery. Two young ladies go to a party and are tricked into leaving the party to get some marijuana by a handsome young man. Turns out, he's lead them to his gange where the mutilate, rape and kill the girls. They then go to the girls parents home where they try to rob and kill the parents, but the seem to have "bitten" off more than they can chew. Can the same be said for the parents? Not for children under 21.
The Manitou (1978)
One of the really good Burgess Meredith horror movies. This movie is about a psychic's girlfriend having a lump on her neck that keeps growing. It turns out to be a 400 year old medicine man that wants revenge of civilization. Scared me each time I watched it.
The Sentinel (1977)
A Burgess Meredith movie where he switches the script on you, right in the middle of the movie. He appears so harmless and helpful to a troubled model who moves into is apartment building, but when her deceitful, murderous boyfriend tries to spy on her late one night, is anyone what they appear? Today's rating would be at least an R, due to the sexual nature.
