Happy Feet -- PG
This is the feel good movie of the year. A great film for families, or just for the young at heart. The music is fun, the animated characters are funny and the dancing is fantabulous!!!!! I LOVED this movie.
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay -- R
A stoner movie in the tradition of Cheech and Chong with much more nudity. If you can rent it, catch it then instead of paying full price. Not worth it.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire PG-13
The darkest and the best of the Harry Potter movies so far. This addition to the franchise is special effects loaded that do not overtake the story line. The stars of the movie are getting older, and the issues they have to deal with are getting more mature also. Like asking someone of the opposite sex out to a dance. Getting that first kiss. Being jealous of your friends success. I loved this movie.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabar -- PG
This is the third installment in the series, and the most mature of the three. The kids (actors and characters in the story) are getting older and dealing with issues such as inner anger, time management, fear of the future and peer pressure; all while trying to cope with school. This movie is darker and scarier than any of the previous ones, and although it is rated PG, I think those 7 and younger may have nightmares after watching it. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, even though I have never read the books.
The Haunted Mansion -- PG
Disney took three of it's rides and turned them into movies. Country Bears, Pirates of the Caribean and The Haunted Mansion are those rides. The first was so bad, the rides shut down. The second was simply outstanding. The thrid is a good family film with just enough horror for the kiddies -- ( You know kids like to be frightened. Look at the popularity of halloween) -- and humor for the adults. It isn't scarier than the ride at Disney Land, so you can judge by that.
Hellboy -- PG-13
This movie proves without a doubt that comic book and funny book is not the same thing. This adaptation from the comics shows frightening images about a demon spawn from another dimension that is raised by a benevolent and trustworthy US government for the forces of good. Ron Perhlman is outstanding in this role, and the other actors are very good. Not for small kids, but PG-13 is the appropriate rating.
Hidalgo -- PG-13
Think "Indiana Jones Meets Seabiscuit", and you have an idea of this movie. Great action about an endurance horse race across Saudi Arabia. Exotic locale and story-line, this movie is appropriate for it's PG-13 rating. Kids will enjoy it, and so will the parents that have to take them.
Hide and Seek R
A suspense story starring Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning. What more need you say? By the end of the movie, you will either love it, because of the great acting and character development, or you will hate it because it took too long to get to the point. I loved it. Its a story about a little girl whos mother committed suicide and was discovered by her psychologist father. After the little girl receives treatment at a childrens hospital, her father moves her to the country to begin over. There, she finds an imaginary friend to play with. Rated R for frightening sequences and violence.
A History of Violence -- R
This movie should be called A Graphic History of Sex and Violence. Judging by that, this movie is definitely not for children. Of any age. Even my 35 year old daughter! However and theres always a however in life I enjoyed seeing this movie myself. It had a great story line of a man trying to change his character after realizing his mistakes of youth. How an incident over which you have no control, can bring back the pass. The sexual situations and extreme violent is the reason for the rating of R.
Hitch -- PG-13
Will Smith plays a "date doctor" that cant take his own advice in trying to woo Eva Mendes. We see his attempts at helping others, and actually learn some good things about love. Kevin James, however and theres always a however in life steals this movie. I absolutely loved it! Rated PG-13 for sexual references.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy -- PG
A rather disappointing version of a classic story of the destruction of Earth, and traveling through the universe. Some will love this watered down version, others will hate it because it is watered down. I just couldn't get into the characters.
Hitman -- R
All the ads said this movie was good versus evil. They implied that a religious order
was training a group of assassins to eradicate evil. They were misleading. This is just a
group of assassins being sent to the highest bidder, and when one cannot perform his
assignment because he falls for the victim, his organization sends other assassins after
him.
Holes -- PG
A good assemble cast of veteran and new-comers in this story that teachers many lessons. It explores west-ward migration, "Jim Crow" laws, true friendship, depression and suicide, all in an entertaining and instructional way. Great for children of all ages, especially if their parents take them to explain some of the concepts they won't understand.
The Holiday PG-13
Men. Hear me clearly. Take your date to this movie! I have nothing else to say about this fun movie.
Hollywood Homicide -- PG-13
This movie has Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett as "buddy-cops" in a supposed comedy. The running joke about them working at more than one job -- Ford being a real estate agent and Hartnett being a yoga instructor and wanna-be actor was funny (the first time). The cameos were poorly used, Master P cannot act, Martin Landau was wasted, Dwight Yokam seemed to be in this movie to offset the rappers, and Lou Diamond Phillip was embarrassing as an uncover policeman dressed as a woman. There was extensive usage of vulgar language (Ford use "bs" almost in every situation during the entire movie), some sexually suggestive situations and mild TV violence.
Hollywoodland -- R
Based on the life of George Reeves, the television actor who played Superman in the 1950s, this extremely well acted movie presents different scenarios about his "suicide".
Home of the Brave R
This movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Biel and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as US soldiers sent to Iraq who return home with mental challenges. I have no reason as to why Hollywood has every veteran as a post traumatic shock victim. The reality is that most veterans came back exactly as they were when they left. Samuel L. Jackson is a doctor that turns to drinking when he returns to America, Jessica Biel loses an arm in Iraq and has trouble dealing with that and Curtis Jackson accidentally killed an innocent bystander in Iraq and he goes ballistic in conversations when he returns. Other than to point out that Curtis Jackson should stick with rapping and leave acting alone, and that Samuel Jackson is such a hypocrite for stating he wouldn't work with rappers (he's worked with seven of them. More than any other actor), this movie offers nothing new. Jessica Biel does show, however, that she is more than beautiful; she can act.
Home on the Range -- PG
The Patch of Heaven ranch is stunned to find out it is being sold from under the animal loving owner. Three cows try to save the farm by joining forces with a jack rabbit and a horse to capture an outlaw and collect the ransom money. Very good family film.
Home Room -- R
This is a thought provoking film about the aftermath of a school shooting. One witness, full of rage and one survivor, full of fear learn to deal with each other in the aftermath of a mass killing at a high school. Although you never see any violence, or even hear the killers name, or see any blood shed, the movie is rated R for the language used throughout the movie. Many "f" bombs and "mf's" and "sh.." throughout the movie, signifying the anger of these people. Although it was true to life, this movie is one you take your kids to, rather than send them to.
Honey -- PG-13
Eye candy movie. Jessica Alba was beautiful, and so was her dancing. This Flashdance/Fame update was entertaining and fun. Mainly for the 14 to 25 year old crowd.
The Honeymooners -- PG-13
For those who remember Jackie Gleason and Art Carney as Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton, this movie will jog your memory of that series. The good thing is that it doesn't try to replace the original, nor does it try to be a "black" version of the original. The actors could have been any race and the movie, as written, would have been funny. Rated PG-13 for sexual innuendos and crude humor.
Hoodwinked -- PG
The "true" story of what happened at Little Red Riding Hood's Grandma's house. Hilarious animated retelling of the classic fairy tale, with some wonderful voices playing the characters. Fun for the entire family, this movie will be the early buzz film of 2006.
Hoot -- PG
A Disney/Walden media family film about environmentally active teenagers trying to protect burrowing owls. Anytime you see thats its a Walden Media film, you know its family oriented. Usually its pretty good. This movie is a decent one for the kids, but it didnt move me. Then again, I wasnt the target audience.
Hostage -- R
A former Los Angeles police hostage negotiator (Bruce Willis) moves to an upscale suburbs neighborhood, when his actions causes the death of a family that he was negotiating for. He takes a quiet job as Chief of Police in a no crime community. When two brothers and a friend of theirs take a family hostage after a failed robbery attempt, the father holds a secret that makes the Chief have to try to save not only the family that's being held hostage but his own, as well. Violence from beginning to end, vulgar language and drug usuage makes this an actual R rated movie.
Hostel --- R
Saying that this is a "sick" movie is an understatement. Presented by Quentin Tarrentino and directed by Eli Roth says this will be unusual, at the least. This story is about three young men who are traveling Europe, looking for the looseness of the drug laws and the women. While finding both, enough is never enough. They travel to Prague and find an exceptional hotel, or hostel, as they call them in Europe. At one in particular, they find women who wine and dine them. Unfortunately, they wake up chained to a chair, in a room where people pay to torture and murder them. The rating of R is probably too light for this movie of gruesome mutilations and nudity.
Hotel Rwanda -- PG-13
Don Cheadle stars in his most important role of his career as Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of an exclusive (read "rich and white") hotel in Rwanda. When the Hutu militia revolt and start murdering Tutsis natives (both of whom are native Africans), the world including the United States turns a blind eye and deaf ear to the genocide that is occurring. Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu himself, shields over one thousand Tutsis refugees in the hotel. This is possibly the movie that causes the public to recognize Don Cheadle as a star.
House of Fog and Sand -- R
Very , very good movie about how people get caught up in their needs, and refuse to consider the needs of others. Ben Kinsley and Jennifer Conley were outstanding. Sexual scenes, violence and language are the reason for the R rating.
House of D -- PG-13
A very enjoyable movie with some serious difficulties. David Duchovny plays an American living in Paris with his wife and 13 year old son who tries to work through problems coming from his past so that he can discover who he is. Told in flashback, Tea Leoni, his real life wife, plays his troubled mother as Anton Yelchin plays his 13 year old self, Tommy. Robin Williams plays a mentally retarded friend who has the "wisdom" of innocence, and Erykah Badu plays a women in the House of D, or detention, who gives young Tommy advice from the cell she looks out of with a broken piece of mirror. Things happen in America, and he flees to Paris, only to returned when he has discovered who he really is. My biggest problem was with him going to Paris. He could have ran somewhere in America, but he could not have gotten to Paris as a 13 year old American child without a passport, and supported himself. Sexual and drug references lend the strength to making this at least a PG-13 rating.
House of the Dead -- R
This movie views like a video game. Lots of zombies chasing people and getting shot up. lots of skin, as teenagers have a rave party on an island. Since the party was sponsored by SEGA, I guess no one checked the island for zombies living there for 100 years. The gore and sexually suggestive scenes are the reason for the R rating.
House of Wax R
The original House of Wax is the first horror film the great Vincent Price ever performed in. The title is the only similarity between that movie and this. However and there's always a however in life for a horror/slasher movie, this is pretty good. The critics want to hate it because Paris Hilton is in it, but she is a really pretty good actress in this. (Ironically, the only horrible acting she does is when she does a strip tease for her boyfriend! Who'd a thunk it!) The horrific ways in which the people of this town die earns this movie it's R rating, and it's admiration.
How She Move - - PG-13
A high school student has to leave private school and return to her drug infected, crime ridden public high school after the death of her sister, and the emotional collapse of her father. To get back to the private school takes more money than the family can afford, so she returns to her love of competitive step-dancing to try to win a $50,000 prize.
How To Deal -- PG - 13
This is a story that shows how well Mandy Moore can act. On the very day her mother's divorce is final, her sister announces she is getting married and moving out. When Mandy goes to tell her best friend, she catches her best friend losing her virginity. At school she meets a new, handsome guy, and she has to deal with this all within the confines of high school. Strong subject matter, a scene where she back-talks her mother after her mother catches her on the couch with a boy who's about to undress her, and the vulgar language earned this the PG - 13 rating.
The Hulk -- PG-13
The good news is that, as Walter Chaw, critic of FilmFreakCentral.com says, Ang Lee has created a stylized art film of a comic book. The bad news is that, as Walter Chaw, critic of FilmFreakCentral.com says, Ang Lee has created a stylized art film of a comic book. The movie was slow paced and difficult to get into at the beginning, but once it got started, the action, plot and acting carried the story. The man actor looked more like Clark Kent, than he looked like the Hulk, but the CGI creature was better looking than I had believed it would be. Worth going to see.
The Human Stain -- R
Anthony Hopkins is a classics professor in a small New England town, with a secret he's had for over 50 years. He's kept it from his collegues, wife and friends. After his wife's death, his affair with a younger woman, Nicole Kidman, causes his secret to come out and shatter his life. Wonderful movie! The sexuality earned it an R rating.
