Movie List

P2 -- R

What can I say? This is my kind of movie. Mindless fodder. A woman is trapped on level P2 of a parking garage by a demented security man who works in the garage. Not for children or most other people either. Only for people like me who love horror.

The Pacifier -- PG-13

It is good to see films for the entire family making the cut, in Hollywierd, these days. This movie is a lot like Man of the House, with Tommy Lee Jones, except instead of being a Texas Ranger, Vin Diesel is a Navy S.E.A.L. Instead of protecting 5 cheerleaders who witnessed a killing, Vin Diesel protects 5 children of a murdered government scientist, from people who are trying to steal his discoveries. Comic violence and crude humor make this a PG rated movie, rather than a G.

The Passion of the Christ -- R

The basic story of the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Based on the books of Matthew, Mark and Luke and the writings of a 17th century mystic nun, this movie version of the crucifixion is powerful and painful. Not for childrens, the R rating is for the extreme violence, but how else would you show suffering for all mankind?

Paul McCartney: The Music and Animation Collection -- G

This DVD features the voice and songs of Paul McCartney on three animated features, a Paul McCartney making of interview and an unrated bonus tract. A must for any Paul McCartney fan.

Paycheck -- PG-13

This movie stars Ben Affleck as an engineer who works on top secret projects of corporate espionage, then has his short term memory erase. That way he can't tell what he has done, or for whom. He agrees to take one final job that is to take 3 years and pay him 92 million dollars. At the end of the job, however, he finds out he has returned his pay to the company and has taken 20 everyday items instead. Now he has to find out why his friends want him dead, and the FBI just want him. The violence gives this the 13 of the PG-13 rating. Very good movie.

Penelope -- PG

Christina Ricci in a retelling of "The Ugly Duckling" fairy tale.  Due to a family curse, Penelope (Ricci) is born with a pigs snout.  From the age of five, her mother keeps her hidden from view until she tries to marry her off.  Herein lies the tale.  Very, very good.  Christina Ricci is always good, and this may be one of her better films for the entire family.

The Perfect Male -- PG

A teenager (Hilary Duff) is tired of moving every time her mother (Heather Locklear) has a bad relationship, which is often. Duff , with the help of her high school girlfriend, invent the "perfect man" for her mother – an imaginary man who sends flowers and writes her emails. When the mother begins to insist on meeting this man, that's when the fun begins.

Perfect Score -- PG-13

A movie about several students who feel that unless they score well on the SAT test, their lives will be miserable. So, they contrive a scheme to steal the test. The students are stereotypical. There's the poor little rich girl whose father doesn't love her enough, the Asian computer genius who squanders his life away smoking dope, the black basketball player who got a pass through school because he was an athelete, the loser whose girlfriend is already in college, and the idealist who wants to go to Cornell. Vulgar language and drug usuage gives this movie the PG-13 rating. That, plus a theme of stealing to get your way.

Peter Pan -- PG

This movie is closer to the original play and book than previously seen by American audiences. It’s heavily special effects laden, but in this case, that’s good. The story of never growing old, (but the cost of that dream) is told in a heart-warming and fun adventure. Loved it!

Pieces of April -- PG-13

Stereotypical characters reacting to situations in a non-stereotypical way. The dying mother, the senile grandmother, the estranged daughter, the favorite daughter, the punk rock brother and the stressed out father all play their roles in a vert surprising manner. The estranged daughter invites her mother over for Thanksgiving dinner, fearing it may be their last opportunity to make things right, and the stove brakes down. Good movie.

Pink Panther -- PG

Although there is no replacing Peter Sellers, (don't you just hate when a review starts off with "Although"?) Steve Martin does a credible job. He's funny and inventive in this adaptation of the Pink Panther series of movies. With the comedy being mainly slapstick, this movie is mostly for guys, but what's wrong with that? Rated PG, guys can take their younger cousins and brothers.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl -- PG - 13

One of three movies made from rides in Disneyland. If only they all were this good! A fun-filled 2 hours and twenty three minute long movie that seemed too short. When it was over, I wanted more. The special effects were seamless and unbelievable (and scary), the action was outstanding (as was the acting), and the story line was well thought out, for a family movie. The rating is caused by Captain Jack Sparrow ( Johnny Depp) being continually drunk, mild vulgar language, pirate style violence (sword fighting, killing and plank walking) and an island full of sexually suggestive actions.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest -- PG-13

Johnny Depp is enjoying this character -- and it shows. The special effects are simply outstanding, and the movie is fun. It’s a wee bit long, though, and the plot seems convoluted. This movie makes a great preview for the third in the series. Yet, it’s still a movie worth seeing. See the first one first so that you understand all they are talking about in this one.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End -- PG-13

The third in the series of Pirate movies, and possibly the worst of the lot. They had to make a third for the money, and this was only for the money.

The Polar Express -- G

The computer graphics effects of this movie are extraordinary. The story line is a very good one (mainly for children 13 and under) of a boy who questions whether Santa Clause is real. Tom Hanks give voice to 6 different characters in this family friendly movie.

Poseidon – PG-13

A remake of Poseidon Adventure, this movie updates the characters and special effects. In the original, the characters took their time to develop. Then the wave hit. In this one, the wave hits early and the characters develop as the movie goes on. Very enjoyable.

The Prestige -- PG-13

Extremely good period piece about two magicians in the late 1890's that begin as associates, become friends, then competitors, then enemies. They both try to find the one thing every magician looks for – the one trick no one else can duplicate.

Prime -- PG-13

Originally rated R, this movie is the story of a patient in therapy having a relationship with a younger man – her therapist’s son! Funny and probing, this "dramedy" highlights some very good acting.

The Prince and Me -- PG

A retelling of the Cinderella, Coming to America fantasy starring Julia Stiles. Although she does a very good job, you have to wonder, why tell this story again? Teenage girls will love it, but boys and men will hate it.

Proof – PG-13

Gwyneth Paltrow is very convincing as a woman who takes care of her father in his last few years of life. The problem is, her father (Anthony Hopkins) is a brilliant prize winning mathematician and he’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Since I have a daughter who may one day have to take care of me, I loved this movie.

The Protector -- R

My bias is that I love martial arts movies -- even the bad ones. Having said that, let me say that Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and yes, even Bruce Lee could pick up some pointers from Tony Jaa, the Thai martial artist in this movie. They must have paid people to get hurt in this. Using no wires, and actually performing his own stunts, the fight scenes were extraordinary, and this movie features the longest continual one take fight scene in movie history.

The Punisher -- R

Now this is a violent movie! It is the comic book adaptation of a FBI agent retiring to spend more time with his wife and son. On his last job, however -- and there's always a however in life-- the son of a small time ganster (John Travolta) is killed. For revenge, the ganster gives an order, the consequenses of which, lead to a bloody and devastating conclusion. The violence earned this movie an R rating.

Pursuit of Happyness – PG-13

This "based on a true story" movie leaves every eye in the theater filled with tears at some point. Fortunately, it ends on a happy note. With an Oscar© worthy performance by Wil Smith, the chemistry he displays with his real life son is outstanding.
