ABC
“Big Shots” (drama) ABC TV-14; Thursdays
Four CEO friends (played by Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan, Christopher Titus, and Joshua Malina) try to help each other out in their sticky situations (some more sticky than others.) The creator of the show says that it is the male version of HBO’s “Sex and the City,” but I disagree. “City” was about four upper class but relatable women, but this show makes the men not relatable…unless “relatable” includes cheating on spouses and hooking up with transsexual hooker (yes…the network has two transsexual hooker plotlines in their new shows.) It’s okay though…the show is not boring in the slightest. It contains sexual situations and sexual dialogue.

“Carpoolers” (comedy) ABC TV-PG; Tuesdays
Four carpoolers (played by Fred Goss, Jerry O’Connell, Jerry Minor, and Tim Peper) get involved in each other’s lives. While it isn’t as bad as “Caveman,” and it has some good actors in it who have previously been in better projects, I would only watch it to fill time until “Dancing with the Stars” starts. It contains some mild sexual dialogue.

“Cashmere Mafia” (dramedy) ABC TV-PG; Wednesdays
What happens when you take HBO’s hit show “Sex and the City,” make it an hour-long drama, sanitize it for broadcast airing, and throw in “SATC” creator Darren Star as the executive producer? You get this dull knock-off. Lucy Liu, Frances O’Connor, Miranda Otto, Bonnie Somerville all play extremely successful legitimate businesswomen that all became friends when they went to business school who sometimes do some underhanded (though not illegal) things to get ahead in business and in their personal lives. Their cutsie attempt to have them form their own “mafia” is lame. It contains some adult language and some sexuality.

“Cavemen” (comedy) ABC TV-PG; Tuesdays
One of the most ridiculous sitcom ideas in a long time, it revolves around three cavemen roommates and their wacky exploits. Based on the series of Geico Insurance commercials, it’s not as bad as other critics have been thinking…but it’s still not that good. It contains some mild sexual dialogue.

“Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann” (reality) ABC TV-PG; Mondays
Used as a placeholder between the fall and spring seasons of “Dancing with the Stars,” this show combines elements of two FOX hit shows, “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” and gives ABC something to fill up their Monday nights. “DWTS” judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba compete against each other by mentoring two singing and dancing teams who themselves are competing against each other. The home audience picks the team that they like the best, and the mentor of the losing team has to choose one person to eliminate. Without the cheesy fun that “DWTS” offers in the form of their B-list celebrities, the show isn’t the most interesting thing on the air. It contains occasional bleeped language and some skimpy outfits.

“Dirty Sexy Money” (drama) ABC TV-PG or TV-14, depending on the week; Wednesdays
If you loved the ‘80s ABC nighttime soap “Dynasty,” you’ll love this soap about a rich family with soap-like problems. Peter Krause (HBO’s “Six Feet Under”) stars as Nick George, the son of the lawyer for the affluent Darling family. When his dad dies mysteriously, Tripp Walker (Donald Sutherland, ABC’s “Commander in Chief”) hires Nick to be the family’s new lawyer. Nick thinks that someone in this large twisted family…that includes a priest with an illegitimate son, a political candidate with a transsexual girlfriend, a Paris Hilton-like diva, and more…might have killed his father. The acting is great by the leads, and the unrealistic plotlines are fun. It contains sexual situations and sexual dialogue.

“Private Practice” (medical drama) ABC TV-14; Wednesdays
Think “Grey’s Anatomy,” only in L.A. instead of Seattle . Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery (Kate Walsh) has left Seattle Grace for new horizons. She now works for a private care center with another group of colleagues who seem more concerned about their personal lives than practicing medicine. It’s okay though…because I never thought that “Anatomy” was the definition of medical care anyway. It contains some medical violence, sexual situations, and sexual dialogue.

“Pushing Daisies” (dramedy) ABC TV-PG; Wednesdays
Brought to you by Bryan Fuller, the creator of Showtime’s “Dead Like Me” and FOX’s cult dramedy “Wonderfalls,” the show is about a young man who has the power to bring the dead back to life…but only for 60 seconds. If he keeps someone alive for more than a minute, someone else in the same general area dies. A private detective who found about his secret teams up with him in order to profit from his gift. On one case, the young man finds that the person he brings to life is his childhood sweetheart. He decides to leave her alive (the funeral director dies instead), and she teams up with them on their cases. They are not allowed to touch each other though…or the childhood sweetheart will die again. Despite its dark humor, it’s actually the cutest, most entertaining show of the 2007-2008 fall season. It contains some occasional adult dialogue and some mild unrealistic violence.

“Samantha Who?” (comedy) ABC TV-PG; Mondays
Christina Applegate is back on TV as Samantha Newly…a self-centered, mean woman who cheated on her boyfriend (“What About Brian” alum Barry Watson), ignored her childhood friend (“Gilmore Girls’” very own Sookie, Melissa McCarthy), and became estranged from her parents (Jean Smart and Kevin Dunn.) An eight-day coma because of a hit-and-run accident though has left her with retrograde amnesia. Since she doesn’t remember her old life as “bad Sam,” she vows to be the best Samantha that she can be, though her current party gal friend Andrea (Jennifer Esposito) is making it hard for her to achieve that goal. Applegate is utterly charming, and the entire ensemble plays well as a comic cohesive whole. It’s my current favorite new half-hour sitcom of the 2007-2008 season. It contains sexual dialogue.

“Women’s Murder Club” (police drama) ABC TV-PG or TV-14, depending on the week; Fridays
Four women…a homicide police detective played by Angie Harmon, a medical examiner played by Paula Newsome, an assistant D.A. played by Laura Harris, and a newspaper crime reporter played by Aubrey Dollar…form an impromptu “club” dedicated to solving crimes in the San Francisco area. The show is based on a series of novels written by best-selling author James Patterson, and I don’t know how the books were…but the TV show seems to be more about their personal lives than solving crimes. It’s the worst new show on ABC this season (even more than “Caveman.”) It contains violence and some sexual content.

CBS
“The Big Bang Theory” (comedy) CBS TV-14; Mondays
Two scientist roommates (played by Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki) are geniuses, but they severely lack social skills…at least when it comes to women. That changes when their new pretty blonde neighbor (Kaley Cuoco, ABC’s “8 Simple Rules”) moves in and shows an interest in them. Maybe it’s just the geek in me, but I found the show hilarious. The show contains some sexual dialogue and content.

“Cane” (drama) CBS TV-14; Tuesdays
Alex (TV veteran Jimmy Smits, “L.A. Law” “NYPD Blue”) is the adopted son of the Duques, a large South Florida family who have made a success out of sugar and rum. The patriarch, Pancho (Hector Elizondo), is dying, and he hands over the reigns of the empire to Alex over his oldest natural-born son Frank (Nestor Carbonell)…ensuing the jealousy and infighting that one would expect. Alex is not above doing illegal things to ensure the survival of his family though. It’s cool to see Smits play a slightly shady character for once, but the drama itself is just hoe-hum. It contains violence and sexual content.

“Kid Nation” (reality) CBS TV-PG; Wednesdays
The most controversial new show of the 2007-2008 TV season is much ado about nothing, but it’s still interesting to watch. Forty kids live for forty days in an old abandoned Western town and attempt to rebuild it. Cameramen, producers, a medic, and a child psychologist were there as well, but they all interacted with the children as little as possible. In addition, the host, Jonathan Karsh, asks them if anyone wants to go home, and so far, only two children have left. It contains some bleeped language and some disturbing images, such as a chicken’s head being chopped off (off-camera) for eating purposes.

“Moonlight” (sci-fi) CBS TV-14; Fridays
Alex O’Loughlin stars as Mick St. John, a 90-year-old vampire private detective (a la Angel from the late WB series of the same name.) He can’t be killed with a stake through the heart, sunlight only makes him sick, and he has managed to survive on stolen human blood from the morgue. He is in love with a young mortal woman that he saved when she was a child from his vampire ex-wife. It makes a good companion piece with CBS’s “Ghost Whisperer,” though it’s not nearly as exciting, funny, or entertaining as “Angel.” It contains violence and some sexual situations.

“American Gladiators” (game show) NBC TV-PG; Mondays
Revival of the popular syndicated competition show that ran from 1989 to 1996, the show is almost exactly the same as the original. Hosted by Terry “Hulk” Hogan and Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila, it’s a physical competition between ordinary folks and huge behemoth Gladiators for the prize of $100,000, a 2008 Toyota Sequoia, and the right to become a Gladiator themselves next season. I hated it in the ‘90s, and I hate it today (though the Hulkster is always entertaining to watch.) It contains bleeped language and violence.

“Bionic Woman” (sci-fi action) NBC TV-14; Wednesdays
This remake of the semi-hit ABC/NBC TV show from the ‘70s is the same: a normal woman (Michelle Ryan) gets in a terrible accident and is saved by replacing several parts with bionic ones (including a bionic eye, which wasn’t a bionic appendage in the original show), that she uses to fight crime. It’s not my favorite new show of the 2007-2008 season (or even my favorite new NBC show), but it’s exciting enough to tune into each week. It contains violence and some sexual situations.

“Chuck” (sci-fi action) NBC TV-PG; Mondays
Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi), a computer tech working in a Best Buy-like store, has all of the US government’s secrets downloaded into his brain through an email sent to him by a rogue CIA agent. Now he is forced to work with two government agents (played by Adam Baldwin and Yvonne Strahovski) to thwart international bad guys. The completely unrealistic concept is part of the fun of what I consider one of the best new shows this season. Levi is believable as a geek, and the show doesn’t make him automatically acquire super spy skills. Strahovski is sexy and has some sweet fight moves, and “Firefly’s” Baldwin is his usual cool self. It contains violence and some sexual situations.

“Journeyman” (sci-fi action) NBC TV-14; Mondays
Dan Vasser (Kevin McKidd) is a normal man who, for an unknown reason, begins jumping back in time, which upsets his wife (Gretchen Egolf), because he is always randomly disappearing. Dan quickly discovers that he is supposed to change the life of a person (hopefully for the better) with his time traveling. He is helped in his travels by his long lost ex-fiancée (Moon Bloodgood), whom he thought had died in a plane crash many years ago. It’s similar to NBC’s hit early ‘90s show “Quantum Leap,” but not as interesting. After a few episodes, it grows on you though. It contains violence and some sexual situations.

“Life” (police drama) NBC TV-14; Wednesdays
Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis) is a police detective who has recently been released from jail after being falsely convicted of murder. He is back on the force and now he has a Zen attitude about life. Secretly though, he wants to know who set him up for murder. The show tries to make Charlie become the cop version of Dr. Gregory House from FOX’s “House,” but instead of being grumpy and amusing like House is, he is “quirky” and annoying. The jury’s still out on how long I’ll keep watching it. It contains some adult language and violence.

“Phenomenon” (reality) NBC TV-PG; Wednesdays
Live competitive reality show judged by legendary celebrity psychic Uri Geller and “Mindfreak” magician Criss Angel with the intention of finding the next great mentalist and/or magician, the show didn’t do much for me, since I’m a hardcore skeptic. If you like magic though, it’s a fun show. Moreover, I have more respect for Angel when he called a contestant out on his claim that he had the answer to a question from “beyond” on one episode. It contains bleeped language and some disturbing feats of magic.

“Back to You” (comedy) FOX TV-14; Wednesdays
Chuck Darling (Kelsey Grammer, NBC’s “Frasier”) and Kelly Carr (Patricia Heaton, “Everybody Loves Raymond”) were co-anchors of a news program in Pittsburgh . They have great onscreen chemistry, but off screen, they hate each other. They hooked up ten years ago in a drunken one-night stand, and Chuck left Pittsburgh not long after for bigger markets. He is back now, following an embarrassing on-camera snafu, and they are still like oil and vinegar, but they have to be in each others’ lives now, because that one-night stand produced a 10-year-old girl named Gracie (Laura Marano.) The show is standard sitcom stuff, but Emmy winners Grammer and Heaton make it worth watching. Fred Ward occasionally steals the spotlight as a sportscaster who always has something inappropriate to say. It contains sexual dialogue.

“Kitchen Nightmares” (reality) FOX TV-14; Wednesdays
Famous foul-mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay brings the American version of the spin-off of his hit show “Hell’s Kitchen”…and it’s just what you would expect. Ramsay spends a week with a restaurant in dire need of a makeover and fixes it up in his colorful aggressive way. Imagine combining ABC’s “Supernanny” with “Hell’s Kitchen,” without the pesky “competition” aspect in the way. If you enjoy lots of swearing followed by lots of heart, then you’ll get pleasure from this show. It has lots of bleeped language.

“K-Ville” (police drama) FOX TV-14; Mondays
Marlin Boulet (Anthony Anderson) is a veteran of the New Orleans Police Department’s Felony Action Squad, the specialized unit that targets the most-wanted criminals, who had his partner desert him during Hurricane Katrina. He now has a new partner named Trevor Cobb (Cole Hauser) who has a dark secret: he is actually a convicted criminal who records washed away in the hurricane. Boulet knows this and is keeping quiet for now, because Cobb is a good cop, but he is always keeping an eye out for him. As much as I like Anderson ’s dramatic acting chops (he was amazing in FX’s “The Shield”), this is just another boring cop show. It contains violence (including several explosions and shootouts) and some sexual content.

“The Next Great American Band” (reality) FOX TV-PG; Fridays
Created by “American Idol” producer Simon Fuller, the show is basically just like “AI,” but for bands instead of soloists. Aside from having different judges (John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls; Prince’s drummer Sheila E; and “Australian Idol” judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson) and a different host (“New Zealand Idol” host Dominic Bowden), it has other differences. There is no age limit, and they have rounds where they are required to perform an original song that they wrote themselves. While it’s not as fun as the original show, at least you aren’t slammed with endless weeks of “audition” episodes. It has some occasional bleeped language.

“Aliens in America ” (comedy) CW TV-14; Mondays
A geeky 16-year-old (Dan Byrd) finds an unlikely friend in a Muslim exchange student (Adhir Kalyan.) It’s pretty standard sitcom stuff with the predictable terrorist jokes, but it has grown on me, and it pairs well with the still hilarious “Everybody Hates Chris.” Scott Patterson (“The Gilmore Girls”) plays the geek’s dad, and if you are a “Gilmore” fan, you may be a little disappointed that his character is so different from Luke Danes. It contains some sexual dialogue.

“Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants” (reality) CW TV-PG; Wednesdays
Mothers and daughters compete in a beauty pageant where the prize is a set of tiaras and a $100,000 prize. The contestants have various degrees of pageant experience, though it appears that the daughters have the most experience. The fun is watching the catty fights between teams and the disagreements between mother and daughter on how to participate in the various pageant queen challenges. It’s also fun to hear what former “Queer Eye” fashion guru Carson Kressley says to the contestants in his role as one of the judges. It contains bleeped language and occasional skimpy outfits on the contestants.

A group of pretty, rich people from Manhattan whine and in-fight with each other, while the title character, a blogger voiced by “Veronica Mars” alum Kristen Bell, narrates the show. Despite being the first new show of the 2007-2008 to get a full season order, the show is boring with little to no humor. It contains some sexual dialogue.

“Life is Wild” (family drama) CW TV-PG; Sundays
The successor to “7 th Heaven” is this family drama about veterinarian who packs his family up and lives in South Africa so that he can help animals there. Predictably, most of them object, but they learn to adapt. The scenery is beautiful, and the acting performances are okay, but it is a little bland for my taste. Since we do have the okay acting performances, I don’t get the enjoyment of making fun of bad ones, like I did during “Heaven’s” 11 season run. It contains some occasional peril involving wild African animals.

“Reaper” (sci-fi dramedy) CW TV-PG; Tuesdays
This is my favorite new show of the 2007-2008 season…if for no other reason than the fact that the concept makes me chuckle. A slacker named Sam (Bret Harrison) is coddled by his parents for one good reason (which he finds out on his 21 st birthday): his parents sold his soul to the Devil before he was born. Now, Satan (Ray Wise) has come to collect…not to take his soul, but to force him to be a bounty hunter for souls who have escaped from Hell. My favorite filmmaker, Kevin Smith, directed the pilot episode, and the show has stayed entertaining since. Aside from great comic performances from Harrison and Wise, Sam’s best friend Sock (Tyler Labine) steals the show. It contains violence and some occasional adult dialogue.

“Loveline” co-host Dr. Drew Pinsky oversees nine celebrities through the process of going through rehab during a 21-day treatment program at the Pasadena Recovery Center . What could be just another VH1 “celebreality” show is actually an eye-opening look into the attempt to recover from addiction. A&E’s “Intervention” may show the beginning of addiction, but this show portrays the attempt to curb it. It’s made all that much more interesting by the presence of familiar faces. It contains bleeped language, skimpy outfits (one patient is a porn star and another has appeared in Playboy), and some very disturbing scenes of the detoxification process.

“How to Look Good Naked” (reality) Lifetime TV-PG; Fridays
Former “Queer Eye” fashion guru Carson Kressley takes ordinary women with body issues and teaches them how to love themselves without the need of cosmetic surgery. He does so by dressing them in flattering underwear and outfits that are appropriate for their frame, and has expert hair stylists and makeup artists give her a makeover. Once they start feeling a little better about themselves, he dares them to prove it by doing a photo shoot…naked. The shoot is never Playboy-style or anything, and it is very tastefully done. I like that we can have a feel-good show that doesn’t require the need of surgery, and I always find Kressley entertaining, but some episodes begin to look a little similar. Still, I highly recommend it for any “normal-looking” woman who is trying to compare herself to supermodels. It contains the occasional bleeped language and partial nudity, but nothing even close to explicit.
