Inspired by the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western cycle and boasting of a score, setting, and voice performances clearly modeled after them, Rockstar Games' Red Dead Revolver is an attempt to transplant the third-person shooter to the Old West with uneven results. Originally a CapCom title, the folks behind Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne took over late in the day and while their signature engine is apparent (down to the nifty variation on Max Payne's bullet time), there's a choppiness to the graphics and gameplay that betrays this as a product of two disparate camps. Worst is a dueling segment that occassionally interrupts game play and uses a different set of controls that are difficult to master at their best - not much of a problem in the grand scheme of themes, but a considerable problem when failure often means starting over at the beginning of a section. The lack of a good save function injures the game, but a nice multi-player game forgives a lot of sins as does the opportunity to play four different characters as the story progresses. It's a shame that online play isn't an option while the story mode is too short at around 8 hours.
